ELEMENTS

'Elements' represents a process, a foundation, and building blocks that bring together components of a whole together. It is with these very elements that this year's senior designers have designed their individual pieces and crafted them into complete collections.

This year's annual fashion show, Elements, put together by the University Fashion Group at The University of Texas at Austin, will take place on Thursday, April 14, 2016. The fashion show will start at 7:15 in the Frank Erwin Center. Admission is free and open to the public. Starting on March 23rd, tickets will be available for pick up at the box office.

In the last 17 years, the show has grown from an audience of 500 in 1997 to 5,000 in 2015. This year, Lexus of Austin will return as an elite sponsor and the University Co-Op will return as a founding sponsor. A panel of local industry professionals including Carla McDonald, Patty Hoffpauir, Sergio Guadaramma, Lance Avery Morgan, and Linda Asaf will be this year's judges. Hair and makeup will be provided by Austin's own Jackson Ruiz.

The event will be broadcast "Live" on the Longhorn Network, which airs through Time Warner Cable, as well as AT&T's U-Verse the night of "Elements".

FUSION

‘Fusion,’ a word that signifies the unity of many things to become a single entity, describes the aesthetic and attitude of this year’s senior design students perfectly. By bringing together a fusion of creative designs that are thoughtfully and intelligently produced, the designers’ garments bond together to create a spectacular runway experience. In the last 17 years the show has grown from an audience of 500 in 1997 to 5,000 in 2014.

“I attended UT’s Fashion Show ‘Contour.’ It can be called the biggest, most well attended, best-produced show in town. The production values are stunning, and for a few minutes you can actually imagine you’re at a couture show in New York,” said Stephen McMillian Moser, style editor of the Austin Chronicle about the 2012 show.

A panel of local industry professional including Carla McDonald, Patty Hoffpauir, Sergio Guadaramma, Lance Avery Morgan, Megan Summerville, Linda Asaf and Gail Chovan will award prizes for the categories of Most Innovative Fashion Collection, Most Marketable Fashion Collection, Best Technical Collection, Best Evening Gown, Best Bridal Gown and Best Overall Collection of 2015.

This year, Lexus of Austin will return as an elite sponsor for the show, and for the first time since 2010, the University Co-op will return as a founding sponsor the show. Additional support comes from Cotton Incorporated’s Cotton University, and The Fashion Mentors. Austin’s own Jackson Ruiz will provide hair and makeup stylists for the models.

Spectrum

Spectrum, a powerful and all-encompassing word, fits this year’s senior design students perfectly. By encompassing each individual’s work as a piece of the overall spectrum of collections, all the designs come to together in a fluid, powerful way that displays a new wave of technical and creative design skills.

Twenty-six apparel design students will present over 120 original designs on the runway using a mix of textures and techniques. Designers for Spectrum have created cutting-edge performance designs that move beyond ordinary uses- they become safety garments, incorporate digital prints, programmable lights, performance fabrics, as well as other creative innovations.

For the second consecutive year, Lexus of Austin will be the presenting sponsor. Spectrum will also be the official kick off event of Austin Fashion Week. Additional support comes from Cotton Incorporated’s Cotton University, The Fashion Mentors. Austin’s own Jackson Ruiz will provide hair and makeup stylists for the models.

Students graduating with this degree study diverse subjects in science, business and design. They are required to excel in all courses gaining the full spectrum of skills necessary to prepare them for a career in the fashion industry. Notable employers of students current and past include Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang, Ralph Lauren, Vera Wang, Zac Posen, Betsey Johnson, Brooks Brothers and Macy’s to name a few.

Transcend

The school stages a professional quality event. Brad Goreski of Bravo TV”s show “It’s a Brad Brad World” attended last year and tweeted to over 150,000 followers “Congratulations the UT Fashion Show was fabulous!” The 2013 show was well attended, and in the last 16 years the show has grown from an audience of 500 in 1997 to 6,000 in 2013. The 2013 show was also attended by Daniel Esquivel of 2013’s season of Project Runway and Cameron Silver of Bravo TV’s Dukes of Melrose.

This year’s show is inspired by the ability to go beyond limits, and the show title, Transcend, embodies this notion fully. They are encouraged to push boundaries and follow their passions, lending to a creative and one-of-a-kind experience for the audience.

A panel of local industry professionals, including Carla McDonald, will award prizes for Most Innovative Fashion Collection, Most Marketable Fashion Collection, Best Technical Collection, Best Evening Gown and Best Bridal Gown. Current Project Runway contestant, Daniel Esquivel will be attending the show as well. This year’s runway show is presented by Lexus of Austin with additional support from  Cotton Incorporated’s Cotton University. Hair and makeup will be provided by Austin’s own, Jackson Ruiz. The event will be filmed and broadcast “Live” on the Long Horn Network.

Contour

This year the students are embracing the word Contour through the use of various techniques and different types of fabrics. “Contour indicates any number of spatial attributes, which, I think is what we get to play with as apparel designers. I think that identifying and manipulating shape or contour is one of the most important things a fashion designer can do,” said Harrison Koiwai, a senior apparel design student.

“I love that each dress communicated a clear aesthetic and a strong point of view. Several were transcendent and stood out as true works of art. From a feather dress accented with silk cording to a tattered leather and satin evening gown, texture and the interesting mix of textures were strong themes in this year’s presentation.

I loved the thoroughly fresh and modern take on the traditional Hanbok wedding dress, the stellar and beautifully-sewn Asian-inspired “tea cup gown,” and the classic hourglass silhouettes that were updated with modern touches like shredding, fabric layering and interesting adornments. Brilliant!” said Carla McDonald, award panel member and TV host of “The Arts Minute” on YNN.
